These Range Operating Instructions are provided to clearly describe the correct range operating practices and procedures for your safety and enjoyment of this private gun range. Please have respect for all members, guests and facility structures at all times.
These Range Operating Instructions cover the use of the range facility operated by the Wabamun Gun Club (WGC). All Range Safety Officers (RSO) and range users are required to read and sign acknowledging these Range Operating Instructions annually.
Regulations from the Wabamun Gun Club insurance provider require that all Guests, Visitors and Non-Members fill out and sign the Guest Registry envelopes and pay the appropriate fee required.
Membership Identification (membership card) must be worn at all times while on the range.
All Non-Wabamun Gun Club users must register as a Guest. Guest fees are $20.00 per visit.
The Stony Plain Fish & Game family or dependent user of the Wabamun Gun Range is no longer insured under the Alberta Fish & Game Policy.
Be part of the team and remember this is your range, please help to police, preserve and maintain the facility.
The Executive of the Wabamun Gun Club need your support. We encourage all members to be active participants and bring forward recommendations that will improve our club.
Range Description
The range facility has two (2) ranges, one (1) rifle and one (1) pistol. WGC Range – multiple lane 200m rifle range and multiple lane 10m handgun range.

Approved Firearms:
bolt action, semi-automatic, pump action, lever action, single action, rim-fire, centre-fire and muzzle loader rifles. Slug or sabot only shotguns. Handguns, all types except fully automatic
Max. Approved Calibres:
Handgun template group “.22 Long Rifle, .40 S&W and .45 Auto.” Rifle Template group “.22 Long Rifle, .223 Remington, .308 Winchester and .338 Lapua Magnums.”
Approved Targets:
Paper targets, all other targets acceptable will be provided by the range. Projectiles/splatter must be captured by the backstop. Targets must not be closer than 10 metres from the firing point.
Approved Ammunition:
Full metal jacket (FMJ), Spire Point (SP), leaded round nose, legal hunting ammunition, legal target ammunition, rifled and sabot slugs. No incendiary, tracer, steel core, or armor piercing bullet designs. Shooting of ARIAL targets is prohibited. (Trap and or skeet).
Note:
AT NO TIME can glass, pop cans, plastic bottles, or similar targets be used on the range facility. AT NO TIME can targets be used on the range floor.
This range is NOT APPROVED for the use or discharge of .50 calibre rifle cartridges of any type.
Personnel
Range Officer
All WGC Executive members are Range Officers (RO).
RO’s have the responsibility to supervise all personnel (shooting and non-shooting alike) present on the property and reserve the right to have members and/or non-members removed at their discretion.
RO’s have the right to know the type of firearm you are using or propose to use.
A Range Officer shall be appointed when three (3) or more shooters are on the range.
RSO’s/RO’s will have the final say in resolving any conflict or interpretation of Range Safety Rules.
Guests and Spectators
WGC members are permitted to bring the occasional guest (maximum two guests) to use the Range (all members must complete the Guest Registration envelope including the information about the guests they brought and pay the fee).
Guests (children and adults) or pets are the responsibility of the Wabamun Gun Club member who they came with and must remain under adult control/supervision at all times. Spectators are considered Guests.
Guests are all persons on the Range property which includes the car park.
Range Operations
Flags
A Red flag must be flown from the flag pole when firing is being conducted on the WGC range. RED flag is located at the west end of the shelter.
Cease Fire
Shooters must request and wait for an “All Clear” before leaving the firing line to enter firing range area.
If a problem occurs while on the firing line, raise your arm/hand and call for a cease fire.
Immediately upon the call of a cease fire, shooters must open the action of his/her firearm, step back from the firing line, place long guns on the rack and await further instructions. All handguns must be holstered, or cased except while on an active firing line or while in the inspection area. All handguns must be unloaded except while on an active firing line.
During a cease fire, all firearms must be unloaded, the breach left open (bolt), unloaded and placed in the firearms rack provided at the back of the range shelter.
Log Book
This range utilizes a usage log book, which must be filled out by all members at each time of visit. (Please print legibly)
Their guest must fill out the Guest Registration Envelope and deposit it along with the required insurance fee ($20.00) in the box provided.
Attendance records must be kept for each person using the range according to government regulations and for insurance purposes.
Ammunition
All spent cartridge cases or shotgun shell hulls must be collected and disposed of in containers provided or removed from the range.
The use of tracer, incendiary, explosive or similar ammunition is prohibited.
Only authorized calibres and types of ammunition may be used on this range.
Firing
No firing before 8:00 AM and/or sunrise whichever comes last. No firing after 9:00 PM and/or after sunset whichever comes first.
No firing if target visibility is reduced as determined by the RSO or RO.
Shooters with loaded firearms must be under the direction of an RSO or RO.
Loaded firearms shall never be left unattended.
Explosives
The detonation of explosive devices or explosive targets is strictly prohibited on WGC Range property.
Firearm Inspections
Never carry a loaded firearm onto the range.
Located on the WGC Range are areas designated for the safe inspection of unloaded firearms.
All firearms arriving at the WGC Range must be cleared at the firearm inspection area or remain cased and then cleared on an active firing line by an RO.
Hunting
Hunting on the WGC Range is NOT permitted.
Safety Zones
Each range has a safety (danger) area designated for specific firearms and calibres.
These areas are out of bounds (no trespassing) areas designed to contain overshoot and ricocheting bullets.
Every reasonable effort shall be extended by the RO to ensure that the safety area does not have people in it during range operations.
Garbage
Burning of garbage is prohibited.
All garbage is to be collected, bagged and taken to the garbage bins provided and located at the main shelter, or otherwise removed from the WGC Range property.
Handguns
All handguns must be holstered, or cased except while on an active firing line or while in the inspection area. All handguns must be unloaded except while on an active firing line.
Safety Considerations
General
Personal telephone (cell) or radio communications equipment is recommended.
All shooters are encouraged to wash their hands after shooting due to the hazard posed by the possible ingestion of lead.
Spectators
Spectators will follow all directions given to them by the RO. Spectators must remain behind any active firing line.
Hearing and Eye Protection
Hearing and Eye Protection is mandatory for all shooters, range staff and spectators/guests in near proximity to an active firing line.
Alcohol/Drugs
Any person deemed by the RO to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will not be permitted to shoot and will be asked to leave the WGC Range. No alcohol is permitted on WGC Range property.
Smoking
Due to extreme fire hazard in the range area, smoking is not permitted on any portion of WGC Range property inclusive of roadways, parking lots, wooded areas and range areas proper.
Range Security
It is the responsibility of all WGC members and their guests to ensure that the gate(s) at the entrance/exit to the WGC Range property are both closed and locked upon entrance to and exit from the WGC Range property.
Membership
What You Receive
- Range Key (DO NOT LEND IT OUT).
- Range identification card (Range ID must be worn and visible at all times while on the WGC Range).
- WGC Rules and Regulations.
Important to Note
- Do not give out your WGC Range access key. Non-members and guests are not covered by insurance.
- VERBAL or PHYSICAL ABUSE will NOT be tolerated at any time.
- Members are encouraged to report all acts of vandalism, violations and trespassers to the WGC executive.
- The main WGC Range property gate must be closed and locked during range use and all gates must be closed and locked upon leaving.
- Wabamun Gun Club (“WGC”) is not responsible for any accident on, or off the range.
Anyone found in contravention of above noted points will be directed by the RSO to leave the range.
All WGC Range Members (Range Officers, Range staff and Range users) are required to sign their WGC (Wabamun Gun Club) Membership Card acknowledging that they have read and understood these Range Operating Instructions.
