Starting in 1995, Stony Plain Fish and Game and the Wabamun Gun Club acquired 312 acres of habitat property around East Pit Lake, a 40-acre man-made lake near Wabamun. The lake and surrounding land is part of a reclaimed coal mine. East Pit Lake is stocked annually with approximately 11,500 rainbow trout. In cooperation with TransAlta Utilities, we have developed the land as fish and wildlife habitat, including the provision of bird nesting structures, fish shelters, and tree and shrub plantings. As well, the club constructed a 20-car parking lot surrounded by a five-foot chain-link fence to prevent vehicles from driving to the lake. The club also provided a garbage dumpster, toilet facilities and signage about the lake.
